You Must Take 100% Responsibility

Taking 100% responsibility for your outcomes can be very effective but it also takes away our excuses and the ability to blame outside influences.

So you’re late to work. What’s your excuse? Traffic? Could you have left sooner so you arrive on time?

So you have a boss who is obnoxious or overbearing. What are your options here? Could you choose to work somewhere else? Can you transfer to another department? Or do you find yourself staying there and try to make it work?

You feel overweight and low on energy. What are the steps you’re taking to combat this? Are you mindful of the things you eat? Do you feel like you get enough exercise during the day?

We all have circumstances in our lives that we are unhappy with. Often times they are a result of patterns that we have gotten ourselves into that we cannot seem to break out of.

This is not me being judgmental here. I want to make room for the fact that there may be specific circumstances that are out of your control but for the most part I want you to embrace the fact that you have complete control over all aspects of your life.

When I work with clients the place that we begin is to identify all of the negative outcomes that are occurring in their life. We then transition to how they want things to be different. Once we have those two pieces in place then they must roll their sleeves up and be a part of the solution.

One of the cornerstones of any coaching session with a client is to get them to accept that they are fully in control of their lives. Once they feel empowered then we can come up with a plan to move their life in the direction that they desire. Often times as we progress through the process of trying to accomplish the desired outcomes we come across explanations from clients as to why they cannot achieve the desired results. It is my job to help them identify alternatives that they can pursue that will create the desired outcomes.

For example, a client may tell me that they want to lose weight but that they don’t have time to invest in exercise. We will then examine their day to see if there are any opportunities to get the exercise that they desire. Can they go for a walk during lunch? Can they use the stairs instead of the elevator? Or other opportunities to get out during the day and get on their feet? If not then are there ways to incorporate family time into the exercise routine to ensure that the balance in their life remains consistent?

I invite you to examine some of the areas in your life where you desire a different outcome. What are you telling yourself about the situation that keeps you from changing it? Is there anything you can do to create the life that you want?

As you begin to experience the pleasant outcomes that result from positive changes you may ask yourself why you didn’t do this exercise sooner. Just remember that life is a constant process of examining the steps we took to arrive at our results so that we can create better ones if necessary. Staying in the moment will increase your self awareness and help you identify the problems and come up with solutions. Be mindful of your choices and if you don’t like the outcomes then you must examine your decisions to create better results!!

Remember to be your best self!
