Adapting to a New Routine

COVID-19 altered many aspects of our lives. Some are out of work. Some are separated from family and friends. Children are at home all day, adjusting to learning in a virtual classroom, away from their friends. As we move through these changes, a new routine is essential. Here are five basic things we can do to get us through this unique time:

1) You can do this

You possess many skills needed to get through this. Imagine yourself in the future telling the story of the Great Pandemic of 2020. What did you do to endure? How did you overcome your anxiety? Focus on what you can control and feel empowered by how you rise to the challenge.

2) Prioritize your time

Regular routines have changed. If you need more time to get things done, prioritize it. For example: stick to quick recipes rather than spending extensive time preparing meals. Or, listen to a podcast while doing chores around the house. Prioritizing what is most important for the day creates maximum productivity, resulting in feeling accomplished.

3) Social media break

While some media is necessary to acquire pertinent information, large doses of it can take a toll on morale. Take a break from all types of social media and find something enjoyable to do. Instead of scrolling through Twitter, focus on your garden. Cut down on the amount of news watching and fill it up with a great book.

4) Stay healthy

Keep your body's immune system performing well by practicing a healthy lifestyle. Get some exercise, eat nutritious meals, and get plenty of rest. Focusing on your health, while the world recovers, is a better alternative to worrying.

5) Family and friends

Stay connected to others. You need their support as much as they need yours. Call or text a friend you haven’t heard from in a while. Drop off a card or care package to someone in need.

Although none of us could have anticipated the massive disruption COVID-19 caused, we can overcome it by looking for ways to make the most of every day.
